Nowadays, there is a lot of debate on the regulations of providing food for the public. While some believe that authorities should subsidize fruits and vegetables to make wholesome foods more affordable, others assert that they should consider taxing unhealthy foods.
On the one hand, some affirm that taxes are more beneficial. From an economic point of view, taxes contribute to the reduced availability of unhealthy foods. For example, unhealthy foods like junk foods, fast foods, and processed products are easy to afford and more available in the market than healthy foods. Therefore, taxes can lower demand, making these foods less accessible. Evidently, the comparison of healthy foods and unhealthy ones indicates that by legalizing taxes, consuming unhealthy foods becomes more difficult. Taxes can also increase revenue, which can be utilized towards providing better healthcare, medical research, and other societal needs, while also reminding the government of its accountability to its citizens.
On the other hand, it is believed that supporting the strategy of investing in healthy foods by governments can be advantageous, and I agree. By reducing the costs of vegetables and fruits, people are less likely to demand convenient but unhealthy options. For instance, a glass of soda is often cheaper than a glass of milk. In other words, since the high price of healthy foods is linked to the popularity of low-priced products, it logically follows that by setting economical prices for nutritious foods, people can adopt a healthier eating lifestyle. Additionally, if governments fund fruits and vegetables, it increases the demand for locally grown produce, which can help farmers increase their income and stabilize agricultural communities.
Opponents may argue that lowering the prices of fruits and vegetables with the help of the state has no impact on the accessibility of unhealthy foods. While it is true that harmful foods remain conveniently available, it is important to note that people should consider improving their health through their own decisions, thereby enhancing their self-esteem and mental endurance.
To conclude, although government investment in fruits and vegetables may not directly affect the unwholesome market, I personally think that if the state were to support healthy food habits, it should focus on the cost of wholesome nourishment.
