Despite widespread access to education, a significant number of adults today still lack literacy skills, putting them at a significant disadvantage. In this essay, I will examine the challenges faced by illiterate adults and propose measures the government can take to address this issue. Illiterate adults encounter numerous disadvantages due to their inability to read and write. First, they often struggle to acquire skills for higher-paying jobs, thereby limiting their economic prospects and potentially leading to financial difficulties. For example, many positions in retail or clerical work require basic literacy skills to interpret written instructions or operate cash registers: without these, adults are often restricted to low-paying, labor-intensive jobs. Moreover, parents without literacy skills are unable to access valuable resources, such as books or online tools, that would assist in raising well-informed children. Given these obstacles, they cannot fully nurture informed individuals who will contribute positively to society. For instance, a parent unable to read nutritional information may struggle to make well-informed dietary choices for their children. Notwithstanding the mentioned challenges, I believe the government can take several actions to assist illiterate adults. Firstly, the government could subsidize basic literacy programs, enabling adults to gain essential reading, writing, and numeracy skills. Evening literacy classes in community centers, for example, would allow working adults to participate. Additionally, the government could create job opportunities for those who complete these programs by funding positions like community literacy assistants, where newly trained adults help teach others, thereby raising community literacy levels. In conclusion, while illiterate adults face obstacles in securing quality jobs and raising educated children, government support in literacy programs and job creation is essential to mitigate these challenges.
